Be Proactive About Climate Change

As you can surely imagine I’ve done a great deal of research for the Evolving Show podcast. I arrived at an inescapable conclusion: we as individuals HAVE TO be proactive about climate change.
No matter what technology will ultimately help remedy climate change, it will be – by necessity! – a partial solution. The comprehensive solution will be comprised of many elements AND a concerted effort.

Be Proactive About Climate Change

• The greatest clean, renewable energy available today can’t support our current living habits and current industry demands.

• The greatest manmade carbon capture technology available today can’t meet the existing need.

Without major changes in our civilization at large and in our individual lifestyles, a huge turnaround in our thinking and values, limited population growth, dramatically lower meat consumption, total discontinuation of fossil fuels’ use, major change in waste disposal, and – of course! – massive cleanup and conservation efforts, NO TECHNOLOGY available today can outrun the ongoing and aggressive devastation of the Earth by humans.

Be Proactive About Climate Change

Put differently, the technology available today alone can’t stop the climate crisis.

To make matters worse, our civilization conspires against us.

The volume of Earth’s natural resources is incompatible with the current rate of consumption. Apparently, no one thought of the future, or generational allocation. No single generation or two are entitled to leave the Earth depleted, barren, overheated, or uninhabitable.

Be Proactive About Climate Change

Consumerism-driven growth economy is incompatible with the survival of our planet. Our ongoing quest for economic growth benefited few and brought about major devastation of the natural environment which impacts us all.

Continuing the “growth” economy requires more and more resources meaning escalation of environmental destruction and consequently, acceleration of climate change.
We can’t continue making the same mistakes that brought about climate change in the first place. We have to stop and transition from a growth economy into a circular economy.

A circular economy significantly reduces the reliance on limited, natural resources. It encourages and rewards restoring, reusing, and repurposing. It won’t require more natural resources, more manufacturing, or generate massive amounts of waste. It reduces our environmental impact. (Think about living with maximum efficiency.)

Be Proactive About Climate Change

A circular economy won’t benefit the financial elites but – as a part of the solution – help save the Earth and life upon it. That’s a small price to pay.

We can’t afford to sit in expectation of miraculous solutions. Each of us has to be a part of the solution.

Yes, it’s true that yours and mine carbon footprint is way smaller than that of major petroleum oil corporations. But there are BILLIONS of us. If each of us takes care of our own carbon footprint and our efforts get multiplied by a few billion it will add up.

I’m positive that NOTHING CAN SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE WITHOUT OUR COLLECTIVE INVOLVEMENT. Perhaps even more importantly, without the switch to thinking of ourselves in collective terms. Not collective terms as in a country, community, corporation, or company, but the global collective, humanity at large, and yes, Earthlings. (If and when the Earth becomes uninhabitable, it will be uninhabitable for all; with no exceptions.)

• Everybody knows that we’re facing an unprecedented climate catastrophe. Daily climate change updates ought to be the number one news. Yet, most media tread lightly around the subject.

• Most people and institutions operate as usual as if no disaster was imminent.

• No laws are being passed that ban petroleum use.

• There are no public service announcements urging the public to adopt sustainable behaviors immediately.

• Meat remains a staple of our diet.

• Air travel has not been suspended or even limited.

• Most people continue living the high life of consumerism.

Let’s not forget that the world at large is controlled by economy and politics, our best interest is secondary. If you know and understand what’s coming, when everybody ignores science, don’t. When everybody ignores the Earth’s warning signs, heed them. Make provisions. Prepare yourself. Become more and more sustainable and self-sufficient, EVERY DAY.

There is hope and maintaining hope is good.

Be Proactive About Climate Change

But no alcoholic ever beat alcoholism by continuing to drink. For a positive change to take place, we must change. Be proactive about climate change!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said:

“The purpose of life is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

You matter. Your life matters. MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE!
